The Jumbo Operator will safely and efficiently operate mechanised hydraulic/electric jumbo drilling equipment to execute underground development drilling and ground-support activities.
The successful candidate will accurately drill development patterns, assess ground conditions, install appropriate ground support, and work closely with technical and operational teams to achieve required drilling standards, production targets, and safety objectives.
Key Duties and
Jumbo Drilling & Development
Operate mechanised hydraulic/electric jumbo drilling equipment safely and efficiently.
Accurately drill drive and development patterns according to approved mine plans and prevailing ground conditions.
Set up and use laser systems to accurately establish the development face.
Mark up development faces in accordance with approved mining instructions.
Read, interpret, and accurately follow drill plans and mine instructions.
Drill holes to the required design grade, line, gradient, depth, spacing, and profile.
Maintain drilling accuracy and minimise overbreak, underbreak, and unnecessary dilution.
Monitor drilling performance and report equipment or operational issues promptly.
Conduct underground development and production activities as directed by the Shift Supervisor, Mine Captain, or Mine Foreman.
Ground Assessment & Ground Support
Assess ground conditions at the face before and during drilling activities.
Identify potential ground-control hazards and immediately communicate concerns to the appropriate supervisor.
Apply approved ground-control practices in accordance with site
requirements.
Perform jumbo scaling when directed and in accordance with approved procedures.
Install ground-support systems, including cable bolts, Gewis, split sets, and mesh, as required.
Carry out stripping and other ground-support activities in accordance with approved mining instructions.
Ensure ground-support installations meet required specifications and quality standards.
Stop work and report unsafe ground conditions or other hazards when necessary.
Technical Coordination
Work closely with surveyors, geologists, engineers, supervisors, and other technical personnel to optimise drilling patterns and advance metres.
Use geological and survey information to improve drilling accuracy and development performance.
Interpret drill plans and align equipment appropriately according to approved designs and ground conditions.
Communicate drilling challenges, ground conditions, equipment issues, and other operational concerns promptly.
Support technical teams during face inspections, measurements, and drilling-related activities.
Safety & Compliance
Comply with all applicable mining legislation, site standards, operating procedures, and work instructions.
Follow all
requirements relating to underground drilling, blasting, ground control, and equipment operation.
Conduct required pre-start inspections and ensure the jumbo is safe and fit for operation before use.
Report equipment defects, unsafe conditions, incidents, near misses, and hazards immediately.
Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
Maintain safe separation from personnel, equipment, and other underground hazards.
Participate in toolbox meetings, safety briefings, risk assessments, and other safety activities.
Maintain a strong personal commitment to safe and responsible underground mining.
Equipment Care & Housekeeping
Conduct routine inspections of the jumbo and associated equipment before, during, and after operations.
Operate equipment within manufacturer and site-approved operating parameters.
Report mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, or drilling-system faults promptly.
Maintain the drilling equipment in a clean and orderly condition.
Assist maintenance personnel by providing accurate information about equipment performance and faults.
Maintain a clean, safe, and organised work area.
Qualifications and Experience
A minimum of a High School Certificate or equivalent.
A certificate or relevant coursework in Mining, Engineering, or a related technical field will be an advantage.
At least five (5) years of underground Jumbo drilling experience, including face drilling and ground-support activities.
Demonstrated experience in underground development drilling and ground-support operations.
Proven ability to operate mechanised hydraulic/electric jumbo drilling equipment safely and efficiently.
Strong knowledge of underground mining practices, drilling procedures, and ground-control
requirements.
A valid Jumbo Operator’s Certification from the Minerals Commission.
A valid Blasting Competency Certificate from the Minerals Commission.
Valid Ghanaian Driving and Operating Licences, preferably Classes C and E.
Ability to drive or operate an SUV underground.
Previous experience in underground mining, construction, or heavy equipment operation will be an advantage.
Willingness and ability to work underground on a roster basis.
Ability to work effectively under the direction of the Shift Supervisor, Mine Captain, or Mine Foreman.
