The Mine Captain will lead and supervise underground production activities during assigned shifts, ensuring that operations meet approved production targets while maintaining the highest standards of health, safety, environmental compliance, quality, and cost control.
Working closely with the Mine Foreman, maintenance, procurement, and other operational teams, the Mine Captain will coordinate resources, supervise crews, maintain operational discipline, and ensure planned work is executed safely and efficiently.
This is a critical operational role requiring strong leadership, technical competence, sound judgement, accountability, and an unwavering commitment to safety.
Key Duties and
Underground Production & Operational Leadership
Lead and supervise underground production activities during assigned shifts.
Assist the Mine Foreman in coordinating and supervising bogging and trucking operations.
Ensure underground activities align with approved production plans, targets, schedules, and safety standards.
Monitor operational performance and take timely corrective action to address production challenges.
Make proactive, safety-conscious, and cost-effective operational decisions.
Ensure planned work is completed efficiently and to the required technical and operational standards.
Coordinate work activities to optimise the use of labour, equipment, materials, and other resources.
Interpret drill plans and ensure drilling activities and equipment alignment meet operational and ground-condition
requirements.
Apply sound underground mining practices to support safe and efficient production.
Health, Safety & Environmental Leadership
Lead by example and maintain a strong personal and professional commitment to health, safety, and environmental standards.
Ensure all underground activities comply with applicable legislation, company policies, procedures, standards, and approved operating practices.
Promote a proactive safety culture and ensure employees understand and fulfil their safety
responsibilities.
Monitor crew discipline and address unsafe practices, behaviours, and conditions promptly.
Identify operational hazards and implement appropriate controls before work proceeds.
Participate in inspections, risk assessments, toolbox meetings, incident investigations, and other safety initiatives.
Ensure personnel comply with emergency response and mine rescue procedures.
Maintain a strong understanding of duty-of-care
requirements and statutory mining obligations.
Equipment & Maintenance Coordination
Coordinate with the maintenance department to ensure the availability and reliability of mobile and fixed underground equipment.
Plan and communicate equipment maintenance
requirements to minimise production downtime.
Monitor equipment performance and promptly report defects, breakdowns, and maintenance concerns.
Work with maintenance teams to prioritise critical equipment repairs and servicing.
Support the effective utilisation of heavy earthmoving machinery and ancillary underground equipment.
Identify opportunities to improve equipment reliability, availability, and productivity.
Resources & Materials Management
Liaise with procurement to ensure adequate levels of mining consumables are maintained to support production
requirements.
Monitor the availability and efficient use of operational materials and resources.
Identify potential shortages early and communicate
requirements to the relevant departments.
Promote cost-conscious decision-making and minimise unnecessary operational waste.
People Leadership & Development
Organise, lead, develop, and monitor underground mining teams to deliver specialist contract mining services.
Establish clear expectations and maintain a disciplined, accountable, and results-driven team culture.
Allocate personnel effectively according to operational
requirements, competencies, and production priorities.
Coach and support team members to improve performance and develop technical and leadership capabilities.
Ensure underground training matrices remain accurate, current, and aligned with approved training schedules and operational
requirements.
Identify training and competency gaps and communicate them to the appropriate personnel.
Promote teamwork, trust, accountability, integrity, and professional conduct.
Build effective working relationships across mining, maintenance, engineering, procurement, safety, and other functions.
Take responsibility for personal and professional development and actively pursue opportunities to improve knowledge and performance.
