The Safety Supervisor & Safety Officer will support and coordinate underground safety activities to ensure that all mining operations comply with company standards, approved procedures, and applicable statutory
requirements.
The successful candidate will take a proactive approach to hazard identification, risk management, incident prevention, safety inspections, employee coaching, and continuous improvement. The role will work closely with Mining, Maintenance, Technical, and other operational teams to identify and control workplace risks.
This position requires strong safety leadership, sound technical knowledge, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work effectively in an underground mining environment.
Key Duties and
Safety Leadership & Supervision
Supervise and coordinate underground safety activities, inspections, and monitoring programmes.
Promote a strong safety culture and ensure personnel understand and follow established safety
requirements.
Monitor compliance with company safety procedures, statutory
requirements, site standards, and safe work practices.
Provide visible and proactive safety leadership across underground operations.
Support management and operational teams in achieving safety objectives and performance targets.
Encourage employees to take ownership of their personal and team safety
responsibilities.
Hazard Identification & Risk Management
Conduct regular workplace inspections to identify hazards and unsafe conditions.
Assess operational risks and recommend appropriate controls in line with the hierarchy of controls.
Monitor the effectiveness of implemented risk controls and recommend improvements where necessary.
Identify emerging safety risks and communicate them promptly to relevant operational leaders.
Monitor ground-control conditions, ventilation, equipment, PPE, workplace conditions, and safe operating practices.
Participate in risk assessments, job safety analyses, pre-start meetings, and other risk-management activities.
Incident Investigation & Corrective Action
Respond promptly to workplace incidents, near misses, hazards, and other safety-related events.
Conduct or support thorough incident investigations to determine immediate, underlying, and root causes.
Prepare clear and accurate incident investigation reports.
Recommend and track corrective and preventive actions to ensure identified risks are effectively addressed.
Monitor trends in incidents, near misses, hazards, and safety observations and recommend appropriate interventions.
Support emergency response activities and ensure personnel understand relevant emergency procedures.
Safety Training & Awareness
Conduct safety inductions, toolbox talks, pre-start discussions, and other safety awareness sessions.
Provide practical safety coaching to underground personnel and supervisors.
Promote hazard reporting, safety observations, and proactive risk identification.
Support the development and delivery of safety training programmes.
Reinforce safe behaviours and challenge unsafe practices promptly and professionally.
Contribute to building a workforce that understands and actively demonstrates safety ownership.
Safety Monitoring & Reporting
Maintain accurate and up-to-date safety records and documentation.
Prepare regular safety reports covering performance, incidents, inspections, observations, and emerging trends.
Monitor safety performance against established site objectives and key performance indicators.
Maintain and update safety databases and relevant reporting systems.
Use safety data to identify trends and support evidence-based safety improvement initiatives.
Ensure safety documentation is completed accurately and within required timelines.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Work closely with Mining, Maintenance, Technical, and other operational teams to identify and address safety risks.
Provide practical safety advice to supervisors, operators, contractors, and other personnel.
Participate in operational meetings and contribute safety perspectives to planning and decision-making.
Support the implementation of safety improvement initiatives across underground operations.
Build positive working relationships with employees, supervisors, contractors, management, and other stakeholders.
