The Shotcrete Operator will safely and efficiently prepare, handle, and apply shotcrete to underground surfaces in accordance with approved designs, specifications, procedures, and quality standards.
The successful candidate will operate shotcrete and related equipment, monitor material quality and application, minimise rebound, maintain equipment, and ensure that all shotcreting activities meet required ground-support and safety standards.
Key Duties and
Shotcrete Application
Apply shotcrete to specified thicknesses, quality standards, and design
requirements.
Prepare and apply shotcrete in accordance with approved engineering designs, specifications, and site procedures.
Achieve uniform application and maximum material density while minimising rebound and wastage.
Assess surfaces before application and ensure they are properly prepared for shotcreting.
Apply appropriate shotcrete application methods based on the design, surface conditions, and intended ground-support function.
Conduct pre-construction field trials to confirm shotcrete production, application methods, and quality before commencing production shotcreting.
Perform finishing and trimming activities to achieve the required profile and surface quality.
Conduct or support shotcrete testing and quality-control activities as required.
Accurately record shotcrete quantities, application areas, thicknesses, test results, and other relevant production information.
Batching, Mixing & Material Handling
Support batching, mixing, transporting, and delivery of shotcrete materials.
Operate batching equipment, batch plants, AGI units, and other relevant equipment safely and efficiently.
Ensure shotcrete materials meet approved mix designs and quality
requirements.
Monitor material consistency and report deviations or quality concerns to the appropriate supervisor.
Maintain accurate records of batching and shotcrete production activities.
Minimise material wastage and ensure efficient use of shotcrete resources.
Equipment Operation & Maintenance
Operate concrete pumping equipment, compressors, shotcrete machines, and associated equipment safely.
Conduct pre-start inspections and ensure all equipment is safe and fit for operation.
Follow approved operating procedures and manufacturer
requirements.
Identify and report mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, or other equipment faults promptly.
Carry out routine cleaning and basic maintenance of shotcrete equipment and work areas.
Maintain equipment, hoses, tools, and accessories in good working condition.
Work closely with maintenance personnel to address equipment issues and minimise downtime.
Underground Ground Support
Inspect work areas and confirm that underground conditions are suitable for shotcrete application.
Ensure all required mine services, particularly ventilation, meet or exceed minimum standards before commencing spraying.
Follow approved ground-support designs and instructions provided by engineers and supervisors.
Maintain awareness of ground conditions and immediately report unsafe conditions or changes.
Support other ground-support activities when directed and within the scope of competence.
Apply sound knowledge of underground mining and ground-support practices to daily activities.
Safety & Compliance
Follow all applicable mining legislation, site standards, operating procedures, and safety
requirements.
Maintain a strong personal commitment to safety and promote safe work practices among colleagues.
Wear and correctly use all required personal protective equipment (PPE).
Participate in pre-start meetings, toolbox talks, risk assessments, safety inspections, and other safety activities.
Identify and report hazards, unsafe conditions, incidents, and near misses promptly.
Maintain safe working distances and follow appropriate procedures when operating pumps, compressors, hoses, and other equipment.
Ensure work areas remain clean, organised, and free from avoidable hazards.
Stop work and seek guidance when conditions become unsafe or fall outside approved procedures.
Additional Operational Support
Assist with underground operations as directed by the immediate supervisor.
Undertake other underground duties, including offsiding Jumbo operations and Service Crew activities, when required and within the employee’s competence.
Support other mining activities during operational
requirements or periods of reduced shotcrete activity.
Work effectively with supervisors, engineers, ground-control personnel, maintenance teams, and other underground crews.
Qualifications and Experience
A minimum of WASSCE, Technical, or Vocational qualification.
At least four (4) years of underground mining experience in a similar Shotcrete Operator position.
A valid MinCom Shotcrete Operator Certificate.
A valid Ghanaian Driver’s Licence with Class C and E categories.
Demonstrated experience in batching, mixing, transporting, applying, finishing, testing, and cleaning up shotcrete.
Practical knowledge of shotcrete application methods and their appropriate use for different designs, surfaces, and ground-support
requirements.
Working knowledge of concrete pumping equipment and compressors.
Working knowledge of forming, grades, and screeding.
Basic knowledge of concrete technology and shotcrete quality
requirements.
Knowledge of underground ground support and mining operations.
Knowledge of batching operations, including the operation of batch plants and AGI equipment.
Ability to accurately record and report shotcrete production and application information.
Ability to operate mining equipment such as IT and LV equipment will be an advantage.
