Ghana Oil and Gas Insurance Pool (GOGIP) is seeking an experienced, commercially minded, and technically strong Underwriting Manager to support the underwriting and placement of upstream oil and gas insurance risks.

This role offers an opportunity for an experienced insurance professional to contribute to the development of Ghana’s energy insurance market while managing technically complex risks and reinsurance placements.

Job Summary

The Underwriting Manager will lead and support the assessment, structuring, underwriting, and placement of upstream oil and gas insurance risks in line with GOGIP’s framework, underwriting protocols, and agreed standards.

The successful candidate will demonstrate strong technical underwriting expertise, sound commercial judgment, and practical knowledge of reinsurance structures and placement processes. The role requires an individual who can take ownership of underwriting assignments, engage confidently with senior stakeholders, identify issues early, and drive placements through to completion.

Responsibilities

Underwriting & Risk Assessment

Lead and support the underwriting of upstream oil and gas insurance risks in accordance with GOGIP’s underwriting framework and approved standards.

Review risk submissions, technical documentation, exposure information, policy

requirements, and other relevant risk data.

Assess the quality and adequacy of information provided for underwriting decisions.

Conduct thorough risk assessments and recommend appropriate coverage structures, limits, deductibles, terms, conditions, and pricing considerations.

Apply sound technical and commercial judgment when evaluating complex energy risks.

Identify material exposures, gaps, and potential risk concerns and recommend appropriate mitigation measures.

Work closely with member companies to support effective local capacity placement.

Reinsurance & Market Engagement

Apply strong technical knowledge of reinsurance structures, including facultative placements, market submissions, slips, and placement strategies.

Coordinate the preparation and review of underwriting and reinsurance information required for broker-led placements.

Work with brokers to develop effective placement strategies for local and international markets.

Drive reinsurance placements through to completion by actively managing broker discussions, follow-ups, outstanding information, and market negotiations.

Support the negotiation and structuring of appropriate terms, conditions, limits, deductibles, and other placement solutions.

Engage with brokers, reinsurers, member insurers, and other market participants to resolve placement issues efficiently.

Review market feedback and recommend appropriate adjustments to placement strategies.

Monitor placement progress and ensure agreed timelines are met.

Support management in evaluating alternative reinsurance solutions where required.

Ownership & Execution

Take full ownership of assigned underwriting and placement activities from initiation through completion.

Manage underwriting timelines, follow-ups, documentation, and information flow effectively.

Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure placements progress efficiently.

Identify gaps, delays, or emerging issues early and recommend practical solutions.

Exercise professional judgment and initiative while operating with minimal supervision.

Maintain accountability for the quality, accuracy, and timely completion of assigned underwriting deliverables.

Escalate material risks or unresolved issues to management promptly.

Underwriting Protocols & Process Improvement

Support the consistent application of GOGIP’s underwriting and placement protocols.

Maintain accurate records of underwriting decisions, risk assessments, market responses, terms, and placement outcomes.

Ensure underwriting documentation remains complete, organized, and readily accessible.

Monitor market developments and emerging trends affecting energy insurance and reinsurance.

Review underwriting processes regularly and recommend improvements to strengthen efficiency, consistency, and risk discipline.

Contribute to the development and refinement of underwriting guidelines, procedures, and technical resources.

Learning & Capacity Development

Continuously strengthen specialist expertise in upstream energy insurance and reinsurance.

Keep abreast of developments in oil and gas risks, insurance products, underwriting practices, reinsurance markets, and emerging exposures.

Build technical knowledge through independent study, market engagement, professional development, and exposure to complex risks.

Apply new technical knowledge effectively to live underwriting situations.

Share relevant technical knowledge and market insights with colleagues and member companies.

Contribute to industry capacity-building initiatives aimed at strengthening energy-insurance expertise in Ghana.

Stakeholder Engagement

Represent GOGIP professionally in engagements with member insurers, brokers, reinsurers, regulators, and other institutional stakeholders.

Build constructive and commercially effective relationships with key market participants.

Communicate underwriting decisions, technical assessments, and recommendations clearly and professionally.

Support management and the Board with concise, well-structured underwriting analysis and recommendations when required.

Participate in industry meetings, technical discussions, presentations, and other stakeholder engagements on behalf of GOGIP.
